Queridos amigos y amigas,
Esta
Letter From Afar, No. 26 (Carta de Lejos, No. 26) es una carta corta.
Contiene solamente una breve nota en español e inglés
acerca de mi participación en el III. Festival Mundial de
Poesía de Venezuela 2006 y una nota sobre Irak y el Líbano.
Actualmente,
estoy editando la siguiente edición de la Letter From Afar,
No. 27, que tendrá las secciones usuales de noticias, ideas,
reflexiones y proyectos de la segunda mitad del año. Además,
incluirá mis impresiones más detalladas del Festival
en Venezuela.
Estaré
enviando la edición 27 de la LFA lo antes posible.

Dear
friends,
This
Letter From Afar, No. 26, is a short one. It contains a brief note
in Spanish and English about my participation in the III. World
Poetry Festival of Venezuela 2006, plus a note about Iraq and Lebanon.
Currently,
I am editing the next edition, Letter From Afar, No. 27 which will
come with the usual sections of news, ideas, reflections and projects
of the second half of the year, plus my more elaborated and extended
impressions of the Venezuelan Festival.
I will send you edition 27 of LFA as soon I finish editing it.

After the poetry recital in San Cristóbal, State of Táchira,

Nota acerca del III. Festival Mundial de Poesía de
Venezuela, Julio 17-23, 2006
Siguiendo una generosa invitación del Ministerio de Cultura
de Venezuela y del Centro Nacional del Libro (CENAL), participé
en el Festival acompañado por mi hijo Manuel Salam Al-Ghassani.
El
Festival reunió más de cincuenta poetas internacionales
y venezolanos. Los poetas recitaron poemas, organizaron talleres
y seminarios y dictaron conferencias en Caracas. Viajaron también
en grupos a los estados de Venezuela. Cada grupo viajó por
lo menos a dos estados. Yo viajé a los estados de Táchira
y Anzoátegui.
El
Festival fue una valiosa oportunidad para establecer contactos con
un grupo de excelentes poetas, además para el reencuentro
con poetas y amigos que conocía de otros festivales.
Durante
el Festival contamos con el amplio apoyo y la amable atención
del personal del Ministerio de Cultura de Venezuela y del Centro
Nacional del Libro (CENAL) en Caracas y en los estados que visitamos.
Me es grato mencionar también la extraordinaria amabilidad
y apoyo de mi guía Armando Chávez Falconi.
Los
pocos días de mi estadía en Venezuela me permitieron
comprender mejor el fascinante proyecto de desarrollo cultural que
se está realizando actualmente a gran escala en Venezuela.
El actual desarrollo cultural en Venezuela tiene muchos aspectos
interesantes. Me gustaría señalar dos:
Todos
los recitales de poesía y otras actividades del Festival
eran gratis y abiertos al público.
También, las instituciones culturales venezolanas no se dirigen
por políticos de carrera sino por poetas, escritores, artistas
e intelectuales. Por ejemplo, el ministro de cultura Francisco Sesto
Novás es poeta y arquitecto.
El
proyecto cultural está incorporado dentro del proyecto más
amplio de justicia social del actual gobierno del Presidente Hugo
Chávez Frías. Este proyecto social, cultural y político
tiene como meta la modernización y el desarrollo de Venezuela
y crear condiciones de justicia social e igualdad de oportunidades
para todos los venezolanos en el marco del orden democrático
del país. Este proyecto está inspirado por la visión
e ideas de Simón Bolívar y otros líderes y
pensadores venezolanos de varios siglos de la historia de liberación
de Venezuela.
Note about the III. World Poetry Festival of Venezuela,
July 17-23, 2006
Following
a generous invitation from the Venezuelan Ministry of Culture and
the National Book Center (CENAL), I participated in the Festival
accompanied by my son Manuel Salam Al-Ghassani.
The
Festival brought together more than fifty international and Venezuelan
poets. They recited poems and organized workshops, seminars and
delivered lectures in Caracas. They also traveled in groups to the
states. Each group went to at least two states. I went to the states
of Táchira and Anzoátegui.
The
Festival was a valuable opportunity to establish contacts with a
group of excellent poets as well to meet again poets and friends
whom I had met in previous festivals.
During
the Festival we enjoyed the sure support and kind attention of the
personnel of the Ministry and CENAL, both in Caracas and in the
states we visited.
I would also like to mention the extraordinary friendliness and
support of my guide Armando Chávez Falconi.
During
the few days I spent in Venezuela, I had an insight into the exciting
ongoing large-scale project of cultural development in Venezuela.
There are many interesting features of the current cultural development
in Venezuela. I would highlight two:
All poetry recitals and other Festival activities were free of charge
and open for the public. The other feature is that Venezuelan cultural
institutions are headed by poets, writers, artists and intellectuals
and not by career politicians. For instance, Francisco Sesto Novás,
the minister of culture, is poet and architect.
The
cultural project is imbedded within the broader social justice project
of the current government of President Hugo Chávez Frías.
This social, cultural and political project aims at modernizing
and further developing Venezuela and providing social justice and
equal opportunities to all Venezuelans within the framework of the
democratic order of the country, inspired by the vision and ideas
of Simón Bolívar and other Venezuelan leaders and
thinkers of the Venezuelan liberation of past centuries.

Sobre Irak y el Líbano
Si los poetas estarían a cargo de este mundo, no estaríamos
obligados a observar y vivir en la miseria en que estamos.
¿Por
qué en la mayoría de los casos los pillos, matones,
mafiosos, locos, fanáticos y criminales profesionales y no
los poetas están a cargo de este mundo?
¿Piensa
usted que esta pregunta es ingenua y que su respuesta es evidente?
¿Sí?
Entonces le ruego volver a pensar de nuevo.
Ahora,
unas palabras acerca de Irak y el Líbano:
Quiero
declarar de manera inconfundible que estoy bajo todas circunstancias
contra todas las formas de violencia. La violencia no soluciona
problemas, sino los posterga para que vuelvan de nuevo y nos golpeen
con mayor fuerza y furia.
Irak
y el Líbano son países ocupados. Los ejércitos
de ocupación deben salir de ellos y pagar compensaciones
por el dolor y la destrucción que están ocasionando
a estos países.
Luego,
todas las partes tienen que disculparse mutuamente por su violencia
y crímenes, seguido por la aplicación de la solución
de dos estados al problema de Palestina, combinado con una disculpa
de Israel ante el pueblo palestino por el dolor que causó
a este pueblo desde la primera Aliyah (inmigración) ilegal
a Palestina en 1881 cuando se inició el robo de la tierra
de los palestinos.
La
razón fundamental de la crisis en el Medio Oriente es esta:
Las
políticas locas de los gobernantes de EU y de Israel y sus
arrogantes planes para dominar el Medio Oriente.
Ninguna
fuerza podrá dominar el Medio Oriente para siempre. Respecto
a esto, la historia nos enseña valiosas lecciones.
Los gobernantes de EU deben renunciar a su demente política
y hacer de los EU un humilde miembro de la comunidad internacional.
Israel
debe agradecer a los palestinos por estar de acuerdo con la solución
de dos estados y por querer dejar atrás el hecho de que Israel
es una creación artificial, producto del robo de tierras
y de violencia.
Israel
debe, no solamente disculparse ante los palestinos, sino también
restablecer sus derechos y compensar los palestinos por las pérdidas
inimaginables que sufrieron.
Y
ante todo, los israelís deben quedarse donde están
y tienen que convertirse en un pueblo de justicia y de compartir
y dejar de ser un pueblo de violencia y agresión. Deben dejar
de ser un cuerpo ajeno incrustado en el Medio Oriente. Tienen que
integrarse en el Medio Oriente y asimilarse en su modo de vida y
su cultura.
Esto
es para todas las partes el único camino razonable para salir
de la actual miseria. Por supuesto, la aplicación de esta
solución llevará días, semanas, meses, años
y probablemente otro medio siglo. Sin embargo, en última
instancia, esta es la única solución.

¿Piensa
usted que estas son ilusiones poéticas, soluciones poco realistas,
alucinación de un soñador?
¿Sí?
Entonces le ruego volver a pensar de nuevo.
About Iraq and Lebanon
If
poets were in charge of this world, we would not be forced to observe
and live in the misery where we find ourselves.
Why
rascals, bullies, killers, lunatics, fanatics and professional criminals
and not poets are mainly in charge of the world?
Do
you think the question is naive and the answer is obvious?
Yes?
Well, I would kindly ask you to think again.
Now,
few words about Iraq and Lebanon:
I
want to state in unmistakable terms that I am against all forms
of violence under all circumstances. Violence does not solve problems.
It postpones them only to come back again and hit us with more force
and fury.
Iraq and Lebanon are occupied countries. The occupation armies must
leave both countries and pay compensations for the pain and destruction
they are inflicting. After that, all parties must apologize to each
other for their violence and crimes. Then a two state solution should
be applied to the Palestine problem, combined with an apology from
Israel to the Palestinian people for the pain inflicted on them
since the first Aliyah, the illegal immigration to Palestine in
1881, and the start of the theft of the land of Palestinians.
The
main root cause of the Middle East crisis is this:
The
lunatic policies of the ruling circles in the US and Israel and
their arrogant plans for dominating the Middle East.
No
power can dominate the Middle East forever. History teaches many
valuable lessons about that.
The
ruling circles in the US should renounce their insane policy and
make the US a humble member of the international community.
Israel
should be thankful to the Palestinians who are accepting the two
states solution and want to put behind them the fact that Israel
is an artificial creation, the product of land theft and violence.
Israel
should not only apologize to Palestinians, it should also restore
their rights and compensate them for the unimaginable losses it
inflicted upon them.
And
above all, Israelis should stay where they are, but they have to
become people of justice and sharing and not people of violence
and aggression. They should cease to be a foreign body implanted
in the Middle East. They should integrate themselves in the Middle
East and be assimilated into its way of life and culture.
For
all parties, this is the only reasonable way out of the current
misery. Of course, it will take time, days, weeks, months, years
and maybe another half a century to implement this solution, yet
ultimately, this is the only solution.

Do
you think these are poetic illusions, unrealistic solutions, hallucination
of a dreamer?
Yes?
Well, I would kindly ask you to think again.
